Kathmandu,Nepal– President Ramchandra Paudel has appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal following consultations with Gen-Z representatives and other stakeholders on September 12, 2025.
Karki is set to take the oath of office today, after which she will begin forming an interim Council of Ministers in consultation with Gen-Z representatives.
Background of the Appointment
The appointment comes in the wake of mass protests led by the Gen-Z movement, which prompted the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, chairman of the CPN-UML, on September 10, 2025. President Paudel accepted Oli’s resignation, leading to the automatic dissolution of the coalition government led by Oli.
The Gen-Z movement, alongside demanding the formation of an interim government, also called for the dissolution of parliament. While stakeholders agreed on forming an interim government, there was significant opposition to dissolving the parliament.
Who Is Sushila Karki?
Sushila Karki, aged 73, retired as Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court on June 6, 2017. During her tenure, she faced an impeachment motion filed on April 30, 2017, by the then-ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre. The motion, supported by 251 signatures in the 601-member legislature, was halted by an interim order from Supreme Court Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana.
Karki is renowned for her bold judicial decisions, including the annulment of the appointment of Lokman Singh Karki as Chief Commissioner of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority and her ruling in the high-profile Sudal scandal, where she sentenced those found guilty. Her fearless stance against corruption and irregularities has made her a respected figure, leading Gen-Z to propose her as the interim Prime Minister.
Support for Karki
Karki’s nomination was finalized during a large-scale virtual meeting organized by Gen-Z on September 11, 2025. She received support from notable figures, including Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, and Janata Samajbadi Party Chairman Upendra Yadav.
On September 10, Karki demonstrated solidarity with the Gen-Z movement by visiting New Baneshwor to protest government suppression. On the same day, she also visited Civil Hospital in Minbhawan to check on the condition of injured protesters.
